DAVIS COMMUNITY NETWORK
Information Providers Committee MEETING
NOTES
IPC Regular Monthly Meeting, Wednesday,
Feb. 6, 2002
City of Davis Computer Lab, 600 A
Street
Members Present: John Chiles, Anne
Hance (Chair) , Richard Yamagata
Members Absent: Alan Brattesani,
Rajiv Seth, Wendy Yoder,
Visitor: Mike McCreary (came with
RY)
1. The meeting was called to order at
6:30PM by Chair Anne Hance
2. We approved the
agenda
Anne distributed a chart showing current
projects and we discussed a couple that are just about to end. John Chiles'
Auksuchai Foundation site has been up for some time. John has some changes to
make which will probably not need IPC intervention. The shell contents do not
come up for review until August. The Yolo Connection project has not sent the
IPC any progress report so RY will contact them to see if they have accomplished
what the wanted to.
3. Projects:
Tom Sands attended the meeting to ask
for assistance with
the Wildhorse Neighborhood Association
Web Project.
We authorized the following
resources:
One shell account - default storage,
no charge
Web Team help
One MailMan List
The List will be set up when the WebTeam
is ready to make them (MailMan Lists) widely available.
The question of whether or not DCN will
eventually need to charge for any of the MailMan Lists needs to be
considered.
4. Open Discussions
a) We talked rather briefly about the
workshops/classes likely to be needed by IPC projects. This is not a new
discussion and little needed to be added. Steve and Richard talked a bit about
the Zope Workshops (there will probably be two; a technical one first and then a
general one).
Steve mentioned that the WebTeam may
return to using the City Training Room for their Thursday meetings since the DCN
Office is cramped and allows little opportunity for more than one or two team
members at a time to do anything constructive. Steve thinks that perhaps the Web
team will offer one workshop a month on alternating topics which will include
MailMan List management.
b) We had a good discussion about the
general needs of Neighborhood Organizations seeking support from DCN. Richard
L. has been trying to reach Anne Brunette of the City staff who did not respond
to Anne's email.
We think perhaps that the City listing
for Ann(e?) Brunette's email address is quite wrong. Anne H. found that it
omitted the ci from the domain and Richard L. noticed that perhaps the username
is listed wrongly too.
Steve and the WebTeam have been working
on a possible template for neighborhood and other nonprofit groups to use while
they are still relatively inexperienced at manipulating Internet technologies
for their own use.
Steve brought a draft of main aspects
for the committee to discuss. The List included the following aspects which
would be pretty much automated via a web interface:
An Event Calendar (moderated or
un)
News, News Archive (weblog style,
moderated or un)
Photo Album
Discussion (moderated or
un)
Document container (for docs such as
CC&Rs, ByLaws)
Minutes container (this was suggested
by RY)
List Signup
Link to Archives
Automatic Navigation (if additional
folders or pages are added
Site search
John wondered if image maps with hot
spots for the various neighborhood Association Web Sites might be a good
addition. This led to a bit of discussion about the use of, and links to, maps.
Some concern was related to making use of commercial sites in a way that DCN
might prefer not to do. RL mentioned that there are some nonprofit Map
sites.
During discussion it was observed that
it might be particularly important for some groups that they post a set of
guidelines explaining the philosophy behind the content especially the reminder
that the free DCN resources should not be used to provide commercial links on
behalf of individual group members.
5. Adjourn at 7:45 p.m.
NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, March 6,
2002
