NOTE TAKER: Paul Healey A 1. Approval of Agenda Approved. B. Project Proposals for Consideration 1. Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center-- Ann Rea Ann Rea, Director of Community Relations for the Center, gave essentially the presentation mailed to the committee earlier by Don Palm. She emphasized the importance of a web presence to attracting volunteers needed by the Center, and the need for an organizational email address. In discussion, Steve McMahon described the kinds of support available from the Web Team, and suggested the Volunteer Center of Yolo County or Yolo Connections as additional sources of volunteers. Anne Hance asked whether there might be a fit with the DCN Volunteer Management Project. It was noted that DCN could not assist with attendance at the fundraising conference described in the original application. The miniproject was approved, by consensus, for one virtual-hosted dialup account, minimal Web Team assistance for the website, and a one-year duration with a report in six months. It was recommended that the project connect with Richard Lowenberg and Vicki Suter regarding a possible Volunteer Management tie-in. 2. Water Resources Association -- Harrison Phipps The Water Resources Association is a non-profit organization operating in Davis, Woodland, West Sacramento and Winters, focusing on the 1992 Yolo County Water Plan Update. Its purpose is to provide public information, coordinate planning and provide a forum for discussion of water resource issues in Yolo County (see original application). Specifically, the WRA's Data Project will collect information from appropriate agencies and generate GIS layers showing relative amounts of various chemicals. The WRA is funded by public agencies. The request to DCN was was for website storage and assistance, an organizational email address and web training. Richard Lowenberg pointed out that the WRA is a part-time contributor to the CBP project and was also a partner in the NSDI application, so that funding for the website could possibly be obtained for this year. Anne Hance suggested that the organization should rely mainly on its own expertise in website development. Steve McMahon proposed that because of DCN's relationship with the Waterworks Project the IPC need provide only an account and possible training. The miniproject was approved for a duration of six months, one dialup and one non-dialup account. Steve McMahon proposed obtaining the organizational address WRA@Yolo.ca.us, to conform with the CPB/NSDI addresses, and it was suggested that the project work with Richard Lowenberg and Steve McMahon because of prior connections through the other projects mentioned. 3. Yolo Land Trust -- Henry House The Yolo Land Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to open space preservation in Yolo County through conservation easements. The specific goal for which the IPC's assistance was requested is development of a website to raise public awareness through display of maps showing current easements held by the Land Trust. Such websites are known to increase public interest. The request was for a shell account for web storage and organizational email. Henry House would build the web pages, but requested training for a coordinator to act as backup for website maintenance. Richard Lowenberg pointed out that this project, also, had a link to the GIS work, and that DCN was looking to obtain a GIS server. Steve McMahon suggested that the Land Trust might be a partner in future grant applications. Anne Hance noted that DCN training on use of the web is for general purposes, not project-specific ones. The miniproject was approved with a nine-month timeline, a report expected in six months, and one non-dialup account. C. Housekeeping Notes for the 02/04/98 meeting were approved. D. Content Review The chair distributed an article, "Making Online Forums Work for Community Networks" by David Woolley, for the edification of the members, and again prompted the committee to be more active in seeking forum topics/participants. E. Reports Tabled due to time constraints. F. IPC Recruitment The need for new members (and liaisons) still exists. Richard Yamagata noted the need for volunteers at the Farmers' Market, and suggested distribution of a new DCN brochure, possibly titled "Get Your Own Website." G. The meeting adjourned at approximately 7:30 p.m.
