Organizational Committee

Notes from the 7-11-96 meeting

In Attendance: Maynard Skinner, Kari Peterson, Tony Bernhard, Lynn Maynard, Vicki Suter, Kris Kristensen, Don Greenbaum, Doug Hartline, Sherri Smith

  1. We had some introductions and Vicki provided a summary of where we're going. Kris brought new folks up to speed regarding telecom developments in Woodland. Vicki reminded the committee that our charge was one of four initiatives which came out of the second telecom summit (held May 23) which will be facilitated by committees. In addition to our own, the other three are: a Resource Mapping committee (Lynn Maynard, chair), a Public Access Kiosk committee (Marie Bryant, chair), and a Regional Training and Demonstration Center committee (Pat Turner, chair). (Vicki - correct?)

  2. Our committee's next step is to offer a presentation for Woodland City leadership and County leadership about what the YARN is and to recruit area leadership to participate. The Woodland Chamber of Commerce is hosting the meeting on Wednesday, July 31 at 7:30am.

  3. Vicki shared info on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting grant program. She mentioned that the CPB is looking to invest in and build upon an existing community network with applications which stimulate online content. Vicki has recruited grant partners to develop 3 major areas 1) GIS, 2) Document Web Server, 3) Volunteer Management.

Vicki emphasized that the grant was a means to demonstrate the value of the regional collaboration effort.

  4. Vicki then shared a proposed organizational structure for the YARN. (As part of the CPB grant she was required to document an organizational structure and wishes to model YARN's after it.) Lynn passed around a diagram which showed an umbrella group representing the YARN and subsets representing the county's communities' independent efforts. For example, the Davis Telecommunications Group is an effort serving the community of Davis, made up of Davis institutions and agencies, and they exist under the umbrella of YARN.

  5. The committee then brainstormed a list of individuals who needed to be contacted about both the grant (as both partners and supporters) and the YARN effort:

County CAO Roy Pederson - Tony
Frk Seifrmn, Mike McGwn, Tom Stllrd - Tony
Betsy Marchand, Helen Thompson - Maynard
    Tim Larren - Vicki
DJUSD Bd members - Maynard, Kari, Vicki, Joan
    Wdld City Council - Kris
    Pat Frye - Don
    Chrysalis/Tom Lumbrazo - Maynard
Davis CofC/Mary Ellen Baldwin - Maynard
    County City Mgrs - Kris

Lynn will work up the YARN Org Chart for a handout and fax or email to all.

  6. Next Step: We decided to convene the broader YARN group at a third summit event on Friday, October 4, in Woodland. At this event, the various committees will present their findings and report on their work over the summer.

Our committee will be prepared to present a draft organizational structure, vision statement, goals, proposed executive committee members. At this point, our work will be done and the executive committee will take over.

  7. Next Meeting: Thursday, August 29, 3:00pm, Woodland City Hall.

    Agenda:

    1. To review Vision, Org Chart, Goals, Structure & Executive Committee
    2. To review invitation list and planning details for 3rd Summit
    3. To debrief 7/31 presentation and plan others for Winters, West Sac. (If they haven't occured already).*

* We decided we didn't need a meeting to plan these. Kris will check with the city mgrs in West Sac and Winters and determine their receptivity. He will ask for the names of area leadership to take the lead on planning details. If it's a go, Kris will contact Lynn and Kari with the names and they will move forward on planning. Kris meets with the city mgrs on July 19.
