Program


Yolo Area Regional Network (YARN) will present a half-day, free public program on regional telecommunications policy issues and opportunities, on May 16, at the City Council Chambers in Davis.

This special Telecommunications Policy Summit is designed for city and county staff and elected officials; school district administrators; community planners; University faculty and staff; and citizens who are interested in or increasingly required to make complex decisions about telecommunications policy that may substantially impact and potentially benefit our regional communities. YARN is pleased to have some of this area's and the nation's leading experts participate in helping us more clearly understand the legal, economic and technical issues that are resulting from newly developing federal, state and local telecommunications policies.

An opening session from 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. is designed especially for anyone who is interested in knowing more about Yolo Area Regional Network and its efforts to develop telecommunications infrastructure at the service of education, social, and economic betterment of this region. The "Telecommunications Policy Summit" will follow, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m..

Introduction to Yolo Area Regional Network (with coffee and morning refreshments)

10:00 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.

Telecommunications Policy (presentations and roundtable discussion)

This lively, thought-provoking session, a facilitated roundtable discussion that will:

* Present background information on the Telecommunications Policy Act of 1996.

* Assess what other cities and regions in California are doing with regard to telecommunications infrastructure development.

* Delve into the complexities and locally pragmatic aspects and opportunities of the political, technical, legal and economic issues associated with new telecommunications policy decisionmaking.

There will be lots of opportunity for public question and answer participation in the session, which will also be cable and web-cast.

Summit Conclusion

Present brief announcement of upcoming YARN programs and events.
