A short bitter song about pollution and over-population, which have only gotten worse in the 13 years since the song was written.

AMERICA , the Once-Beautiful

(to tune of "America, The Beautiful")

by Pam Green , © 1990

O , hideous , for smog-filled skies, for desecrated plains ;
Thy purpled mountains' nudity is caused by acid rains.
America, America, God shed Her grace on thee,
But can't withstand the hand of Man
From sea to filth-filled sea !

O , hideous , for endless hordes that breed unbound by law;
That multiply, devouring land with all rapacious maw.
America, America, past Nature to control,
Unending host from coast to coast,
Equator to the Pole !
