Poems and Thoughts    by Frank Maurer

[Return to Poems and Thoughts index page]

Cesar Chavez, et al.

Primates are a special group of mammals,
And we, among others, are the gregarious ones.
The behavior of non-human males, controlling their group,
Is often to mate with selected females.
This maintains their dominance and their gene flow.
The power-mating behavior seems to manifest
In normal-adaptive primate behavior,
Even though it is very stressful for an alpha male.

We humans, again primates, are appalled
Regarding the mating behavior of often
Powerful, successful human males,
Choosing multiple partners, and abusing young girls.
I am sure you can recall such men in our society.
Today we are all shocked by the revealed past of Cesar Chavez,
Both famous and powerful in the Farm Movement.
Does the behavior of human males somewhat mirror
That behavior we see in baboons, for instance?
We are related. Something to ponder.
