Choosing gifts from nonprofit groups to give to friends and relatives not only helps support the nonprofits, but often affords the gift-giver an opportunity to offer something out of the ordinary, items that cannot be found in the usual commercial outlets. QRWC has a number of such items, which we are pleased to suggest to our members and supporters as gift ideas for the holiday season or, at any time, for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other celebrations. Please take a look at our list and give us a call if you see something appealing; we’ll make arrangements for prompt delivery.

QRWC Gift Boutique Item List

1. QRWC’s own T-shirt in a variety of tasteful colors on high-quality cotton. On the front of the shirt is a “pocket logo.” On the back, our original art-work quail logo with the slogan floating above it reading “Join Something Wild.” Printed by local T-shirt specialists Screaming Squeegies, who have given us a generous discount for our bulk order, these shirts would make a great gift for the upcoming holiday season; or of course for any time of the year.
($15 per shirt—in M, L, and XL— or free with a $50 membership or renewal)

2. CDs
An Evening with Gary Snyder
-- a two-CD set of an original performance by internationally renown poet Gary Snyder for the benefit of QRWC. The event took place at the Varsity Theatre in Davis, CA on 16 November 2000, playing to a full house. The event was professionally recorded, live. This is a strictly limited edition, not distributed or available elsewhere. A collector’s item!
($25 for the set, or free with a $75 membership or renewal)

Poems from Scotland: The Words, The Accent and A' That -- selected poems spanning 600 years, annotated, and read in Scots English by Duncan McMartin, a Scotsman residing in Davis and a supporter of Quail Ridge Reserve. The CD is as charming as it is informative. ($20, or free with a $50 membership).

3. DVDs (also available in VHS) -- choose either, or both, of the following:

(1) Quail Ridge Reserve: The Natural and Cultural History of California’s Coast Range. 12-minute and 28-minute versions; the longer version provides an account of the human/nature interaction in the region as successive cultures have inhabited this part of the state. The abridged version focuses on the wildlife and habitat on the Reserve. Each features superb scenic shots of the Reserve as well as close-ups of flora and fauna.
($20, or free with a $50 membership or renewal)

(2) Reflections: A Musical Journey through Quail Ridge Reserve. This is QRWC’s most recent DVD (released October 2000), featuring stunning film footage of Quail Ridge Reserve through the four seasons, accompanied by the captivating music of recording artists Alasdair Fraser, Sky Walkinstik-Man Alone, Mary Youngblood, Ottmar Liebert, EKO, and Christine Bonner.
($25, or free with a $75 membership or renewal)

4. Perennial grasses notecards: These beautiful cards on cardstock come in sets of nine, with envelopes, in a choice of four earth tones. Each set contains original drawings (by former Davis resident Jeanne Brennan) of eight different species of California’s magnificent native perennial bunchgrasses. Packaged in plastic envelopes, the sets are ready for gift wrapping.
($10/set, or free with a $35 membership or renewal; thereafter, $8/set for QRWC members; special half-price offer of $125 for 25 sets for gifts or fundraisers)

5. Books:
  • The Nature of California. This is a beautifully illustrated, easily held basic guide to the major plants and animals native to the state. An excellent companion for walks on Quail Ridge Reserve or elsewhere in California habitats.
($20, or free with a $50 membership or renewal)

  • Writing the Wind: A Celtic Resurgence. The first anthology of modern Celtic poetry from all six Celtic languages, with translations into English by the poets or by specialist translators. The poems cover many themes, but nature and the human impact on traditional landscapes figure among them. The Conservancy’s Secretary-Treasurer Lenora Timm has translated two of the Breton poets represented in the anthology; she offers a 1/2-hour reading (Breton & English) to the recipient with a guest.
($20, or free with a $50 membership or renewal)

  • The Sutter Buttes: A Naturalist’s View. This shortest mountain range in the world located near Marysville (called by Native Americans ‘Middle Mountain’) is the subject of naturalist Walt Anderson’s exquisite prose and detailed drawings. A gifted artist as well as ecologist, Walt has signed a limited number of these books for us and added both ink and color remarques on the first page. A collector’s item! A collector’s item!
($20 for a signed book; $25 for black & white remarques; $30 for color; or free with a $50, $75, or $100 donation, respectively)

  • California Wildflowers: A Beginner’s Guide to the State’s Most Common Flowers. California has thousands of different wildflowers which may be found throughout the state—in redwood forests, dry deserts, wetlands, mountain meadows and along roads and highways. This colorfully illustrated manual is light and easy to carry, with helpful descriptions of leading flower species found in the state’s major habitat types.
($10, or free with a $35 membership or renewal)

6. Faux Sea Glass pendants: These are recycled glass fragments of many different colors tumbled for a month, then wrapped by hand with thin wire, creating an unusual and beautiful piece of jewelry that will evoke admiring comments.
($20, or free with a $35 membership or renewal)

7. Pictish/Celtic stones: Carved-to-order by hand (chisel and mallet) by a descendant of Kenneth MacAlpin, first king of Scotland (843 AD) and of his Pictish ancestors.
($30-$1,000)

8. Other gift ideas:
  • A membership in QRWC. Giving a gift membership in QRWC helps raise awareness about the Conservancy’s work to save open space and wildlife habitat, and will foster research and education. The recipient may participate in a year of free walks and receive the gift corresponding to the membership level you select.
    ($25 and up)

  • A QR Reserve Evening Walk. Treat someone to one of our “nature and culture” private evening walks on the Reserve—they are educational and a lot of fun with delicious finger foods and a selection of wines and other beverages. Your gift recipient chooses the date from our schedule.
($150 for a tour of four people, which includes gift memberships as well as gift items.)

  • A Special Private Walk (Day or Evening). Take a group of up to 10 friends for this special walk on Quail Ridge Reserve; complimentary wine and finger foods included. ($200 donation for 10, or free with a total of $400 of memberships, including gift items.)
